I thought that anyone who lives, or who may find themselves in the vicinity of that area late night should be alerted to this - since this youth may try to do this again (since what I am about to relate was so unrewarding):Last night, a close friend of mine was walking across Bruntsfield Links between Bruntsfield Road & Whitehouse Loan, when she was approached from behind by a youth, approximate 17 years old, wearing a dark hood and dark trousers, with a peroxide blonde hair that came down just above his eyes as a fringe. His skin was (according to her) white - and had the approximate appearance of being a junkie.
[We believe that he had not followed her up from the Road, but rather came across the grass as she had not heard his steps until just before. It would to be an opportunistic crime/theft.]
As he came abreast of her, he stopped her (by excusing himself to her) and then demanded she give him her bag and her mobile phone, whilst holding in his left hand, a small knife (pen knife size, at eye level. She promptly did so, and then he walked away back towards Bruntsfield. She, on the other hand managed to walk relatively calmly to Whitehouse Loan and then up to Strathearn Road where I live. She was unhurt, but as you can imagine somewhat shaken.
The police were called at 2pm and arrived after 10 minutes whereupon they took her statement. They will now have passed it on up to the local CID - (Police Detectives) to investigate. An initial search of the area was undertaken, however due to other incidents occurring last night, it may been curtailed.
[There was a report last night of a drunken/crazed man wielding a sword, or large metal implement over by the Bridges last night at the time of this, and the police officers who had been with us had to go in, as mass response. They quickly returned (as they were not needed) and concluded recording the statement]
Whilst waiting, we managed to call Orange to report her phone stolen and her sim card is now locked. As it is, the youth will have gained absolutely nothing from this endeavor in which to use or sell, as it was very fortunate, that at the time, when the youth accosted her and demanded her bag, all she had was some facial creams and cosmetic stuff. She had left her cards and such like at her flat.
My friend is fine. This morning I walked her back to her flat by going a slightly different route to the one she took. I made sure of that before I left her, at her own flat to get some sleep and to relax properly.
Again I thought you should all be aware of this.
